Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a novel in which setting plays an important feature. The novel is set in London and draws heavily on Stevenson’s knowledge of his hometown Edinburgh to create a chilling setting which emphasises the themes of good and evil.
Most of the London locations mentioned the most are in Soho. Even though fictional, there are places we can see which match the description. The walk includes excerpts of the book which students are welcome can read out - it really helps recreate gothic London. Throughout the tour I'll also share interesting facts about Robert Louis Stevenson and draw some parallels with his other works.

So, firstly to the title, it is not Jekyll and Hyde, but The Curious Case of? And it gets more curious as you walk around. "Very enjoyable tour. Hazel the guide lived up to expectations from all the previous reviews read. The tour really helped to understand the setting of the book in the time period of Victorian London. The tour was intelligent, thought provoking and left me with wanting to read the book as well as return to have a daylight look at several new places. "A fascinating tour based around Covent Garden which neatly explores the background to Jekyll & Hyde through the London of the time. As always on these tours you discover so much about places in London you either haven’t noticed before or have noticed but not fully understood. On this occasion one of these was ‘The Moon Under Water’ a cheap place for a drink in Leicester Square which I know well but hadn’t appreciated was the home of Dr Hunter and his school of anatomy. Next time you drink there stop to think of all the public dissections you could have enjoyed watching on the same spot if you had arrived a couple of centuries earlier!"
